A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
