The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
