Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
