Government Official States MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from talking about secret information in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
